LottoByText & London 2012 - The Figures

Last night we wished our final farewell to London 2012 and beckoned in a new era of enthusiasm for sport in Britain. The raw emotion expressed by both athletes and fans over the previous weeks has given the whole country a further sense of belonging, pride and success. It's great to see and let's hope this feeling stays with us for years to come.

We, at LottoByText, believe it is very important to highlight the National Lottery's contribution to the Olympics. First because we never would have achieved such success without the National Lottery; and secondly because without our many members of LottoByText the National Lottery will not have had the funding to support such work.

Your participation in the UK's favourite text-based Lottery Syndicate company has helped Team GB go from a one medal winning nation in 1996 to a 29 Gold, 27 Silver and 19 Bronze medal winning Olympic superpower.

The figures related to the National Lottery and the Olympics are revealing, to say the least.

Since the National Lottery was introduced in 1994, it has pumped £4.4 billion into British Sport both at the grass-roots and elite standards.

A further £2.2 billion and £66 million for the Olympics and Paralympics respectively has been donated by the National Lottery. These astronomical figures suggest that without the National Lottery the success of the past few weeks would not have been possible.

Recent news also suggests the National Lottery is going to increase its funding due to changes to distribution brought about by the government.

From next year the proportion of public funds to Lottery will be around one to two, with the taxpayer contributing £40 million and the Lottery an estimated £80-87 million a year.

Sir Chris Hoy, six-time Olympic Gold medalist, welcomed the contributions made by the National Lottery.

"National Lottery and Government funding has helped me to achieve all my dreams in cyclin." Said Hoy.

"I am old enough to remember a time when things were run off a shoe string budget before National Lottery...having these guarantees for the future will be a huge boost."

Sir Steve Redgrave backed up these claims.

"We used to get a lot of silvers, but since the Lottery funding has come in, those athletes are providing the results."

Finally, Olympic Golden Girl, Jessica Ennis couldn't praise the National Lottery enough.

"Funding from the National Lottery and the Government has helped and supported me throughout my athletics career and allowed me to attain my goals."

Fundamentally, the Olympics, British Sport and the National Lottery are intrinsically linked from here on in.

It is up to us to keep the momentum going through participation of support and also supporting the National Lottery.
